Earthquake in Western Aichi Prefecture on April 8
On April 8, 2025, at 19:26, an M4.6 earthquake occurred in western Aichi Prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 3). The quake occurred within the Philippine Sea Plate at a depth of 36 km and was classified as a strike-slip fault type, with an E-W tension axis.
A review of seismic activity since 1997 shows that three earthquakes of M4.5 or greater have occurred near the epicenter (Area b). This includes an M4.8 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on November 29, 1999, and another M4.8 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on December 24, 2005.
Furthermore, a review of seismic activity since 1919 reveals that M6 earthquakes have occasionally occurred near the epicenter (Area c). Notably, the M6.8 Mikawa Earthquake on January 13, 1945, resulted in 1,961 fatalities, 896 injuries, and destroyed 5,539 residential buildings (according to the "Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan").
