Earthquake Offshore of Tokachi on June 2

On June 2, 2025, at 03:51, an M6.1 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) occurred at a depth of 27 km offshore of Tokachi. This earthquake occurred between the Pacific Plate and continental plate. The focal mechanism suggests a reverse fault type (CMT solution) with a pressure axis oriented in a WNW-ESE direction. On June 3, at 22:18, another earthquake, a M5.2 (maximum seismic intensity 3) occurred in nearly the same location.
A review of seismic activity since October 2001 suggests an M7.1 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 6 Lower) occurred near the epicenter (Area b) on September 26, 2003.
A review of seismic activity since 1919 reveals that earthquakes of M8.0 or greater have occurred two times near the epicenter (Area c). Notably, the 2003 Tokachi-oki Earthquake (M8.0, maximum seismic intensity 6 Lower) caused a tsunami that reached a maximum height of 255 cm at Tokachi Port, Hokkaido. Tsunamis were also observed along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Shikoku. Two people were killed or missing, 849 people were seriously and slightly injured, and 2,073 houses were damaged (Damages are based on the "Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan").
