Earthquake Near Taiwan on June 11
On June 11, 2025 at 20:00, an M6.0 earthquake occurred near Taiwan at a depth of 38 km (the largest tremor recorded in Japan had a maximum seismic intensity 2). The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a reverse fault with the pressure axis oriented in the WNW-ESE direction.
A review of seismic activity since September 2009 indicates that earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater have frequently occurred near the epicenter (Area a). Notably, on September 18, 2022, an M7.3 earthquake (the largest tremor recorded in Japan registered a seismic intensity 1) and an M7.7 earthquake on April 3, 2024 (the largest tremor recorded in Japan registered a seismic intensity 4). The latter earthquake triggered a tsunami, with wave heights reaching 27 cm at Kubura on Yonagunijima Island, 25 cm at Hirara on Miyakojima Island, and 17 cm at Ishigaki Port on Ishigakijima Island.
A review of seismic activity since 1904 indicates that earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater frequently occur near the epicenter (Area b). Notably, the Hualien Earthquake (M8.2) on June 5, 1920, resulted in 5 fatalities and 20 injuries in Taiwan. On November 15, 1986, an M7.4 earthquake (the largest tremor recorded in Japan, registered a seismic intensity 3) triggered a tsunami with a maximum height of 30 cm above normal tide levels in Hirara, Miyakojima Island, and caused 13 deaths and 45 injuries in Taiwan. Furthermore, on September 21, 1999, the Chi-Chi Earthquake (M7.6, the largest tremor recorded in Japan, registered a seismic intensity 2) resulted in 2,413 deaths and 8,700 injuries in Taiwan (Damages are based on the "Catalog of Damaging Earthquakes in the World" by Utsu and the International Earthquake Engineering Center).
