Earthquake in the Satsuma Region, Kagoshima Prefecture on November 3

At 19:18 on November 3, 2025, an M3.3 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) occurred at a very shallow depth in the Satsuma region, Kagoshima Prefecture. The earthquake occurred within the crust. Seismic activity in the earthquake's focal area (Area a) temporarily increased between around 17:00 and 21:00 on November 3, and throughout November, a total of 17 events with seismic intensity 1 or greater were recorded (1 event with seismic intensity 4, 5 events with seismic intensity 3, 5 events with seismic intensity 2, and 6 events with seismic intensity 1).
A review of seismic activity since October 2000 indicates that earthquakes with M2.0 or greater have often occurred near the epicenters (Area a). Notably, an M2.9 earthquake occurred on February 12, 2024 (depth 9 km, maximum seismic intensity 1); however, no events with M3.0 or greater have occurred there since.A review of seismic activity since 1919 indicates that 9 earthquakes with M5.0 or greater have occurred near the epicenter (Area b). Notably, the "Ebino Earthquake" on February 21, 1968 (M6.1, maximum seismic intensity 5), resulted in 3 deaths, 42 injuries, and 368 destroyed houses (according to data from the "Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan").
