Earthquake Offshore of Kushiro on September 26



An M5.7 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) occurred at 16:01 on September 26, 2024, at a depth of 59 km offshore of Kushiro. This earthquake occurred inside the Pacific Plate. The focal mechanism (CMT solution) is of the type with a compression axis in the WNW-ESE direction.
For the seismic activity since October 2001, an M6.0 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) occurred on February 25, 2023 near the hypocenter of the current earthquake (Area b).
For the seismic activity since 1919, three earthquakes of M7.0 or over have occurred in the area around the epicenter of the current earthquake (Area c). The largest earthquake was "the Earthquake off the Coast of Nemuro Peninsula on June 17, 1973" (M7.4, maximum seismic intensity 5), which caused a tsunami of 280 cm (maximum height above normal tide level) at Hanasaki, Nemuro City. The earthquake and tsunami caused damage with 28 injuries, 5,153 damaged houses, and so on. (According to "Disaster Records in 1973 and 1974, Hokkaido").
