For seismic activity since October 1919, earthquakes of M5.0 or over have sometimes occurred in the area around the present seismic activity (Area c). Of these, an M5.3 earthquake on September 25, 1975 caused land cracks and damage in Kodakarajima Island, Toshima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, and an M3-class earthquake on July 7, 1972 caused land cracks and shifting of roof tiles in Kodakarajima Island, Toshima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture (according to the "Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan").
