Earthquake in the Kuril Islands on April 24
On April 24, 2022 at 10:53 (JST), there was an M6.2 earthquake (no observatory with seismic intensity 1 or over in Japan) in the Kuril Islands.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M6.0 or over. On November 15, 2006, there was an M7.9 earthquake which caused seismic intensity 2 in Hokkaido, and tsunami observed in a wide area along the Okhotsk Sea coasts and the Pacific coasts and the Izu-Ogasawara Islands, such as 84 cm height at Tsubota, Miyakejima Island.
For the seismic activity since 1919, in the region around the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M7.0 or over. On January 13, 2007, there was an M8.2 earthquake, east of the Kurile Islands (offshore east of Simushir Island) which caused shaking of seismic intensity 3 observed in the area from Hokkaido to Tohoku region, and tsunami observed along the northern Japan Sea coast of Hokkaido, the Okhotsk Sea coast, the Pacific coast and the Izu-Ogasawara Islands, such as 43 cm height at Tsubota, Miyakejima Island.
