Seismic Activity in the Southern Kyoto Prefecture
In the southern Kyoto prefecture, the seismic activity became high since March 31, 2022, and till May 12 at 08 o'clock, there occurred 14 earthquakes with seismic intensity 1 or over (maximum seismic intensity: number of earthquakes, 4: 2, 3: 2, 2: 2, 1: 8). Of these there occurred 4 earthquakes with M4.0 or over and the largest were 2 M4.4 earthquakes (maximum seismic intensity 4 for both) on March 31 and on May 2, both at a depth of 13 km. These events occurred within the crust. The focal mechanisms of these events showed a strike-slip fault type with a compression axis in an E-W direction. The vicinity of these epicenters (Area a) are enlarged and the origins seem to be distributed in an WNW-ESE direction.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M4.0 or so. The seismic activity similar to the recent one, in which several earthquakes of M4.0 or over occur in a period of one month or so, is observed in the southern side of the recent activity area in February to March, 1999.
For the seismic activity since 1919, in the region around the recent event (Area b), there have been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. Among them, on June 18, 2018 there was an earthquake in the northern Osaka prefecture (M6.1), which caused damage with 6 fatalities, 462 injured persons and so on (as of April 1, 2019, Fire and Disaster Management Agency)
