Earthquake in the Noto Region, Ishikawa Prefecture on June 19 – (1) Summary – (1)
(1) Summary
In the Noto region, Ishikawa prefecture, the number of earthquakes is increasing since about 2018, and the seismic activity has become high since December 2020 and it has become higher since about July 2021. This tendency still continues in June 2022.
On June 19, 2022 at 15:08 (JST), there was an M5.4 earthquake at a depth of 13 km in the Noto region, Ishikawa prefecture. Besides seismic intensity 6 Lower observed in Suzu City, Ishikawa prefecture, seismic intensity 5 Lower ~ 1 was observed in the area extending from Tohoku to Kinki regions. Also, long-period ground motion class 1 was observed in the Noto Town, Ishikawa prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in an NNW-SSE direction. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced Earthquake Early Warning (Warning) at 15:08:19.1 (JST), 8.6 sec. after the detected time of the first seismic wave.
In the vicinity of the recent event, on 20th at 10:31 (JST), there was an earthquake with maximum seismic intensity 5 Upper. From 19th earthquake till July 8 at 09 o'clock (JST), there occurred 35 earthquakes with seismic intensity 1 or over (maximum seismic intensity: number of earthquakes, 6 Lower: 1, 5 upper: 1, 4: 1, 3: 2, 2: 6, 1: 24).
These events caused damage with 7 injured persons and 3 partially damaged houses (as of July 1, 2022 at 17:00 (JST), Fire and Disaster Management Agency).
Kanazawa Local Meteorological Office inspected the seismic intensity observation stations observing seismic intensity 5 Upper or larger, and it was confirmed that the observing environments of the seismic intensity observing stations were not changed by the event. The situation of the damage and shaking of the surrounding area of the seismic intensity observation stations was confirmed.
Table 1-1 shows the damage situation. Table 1-2 shows the number of earthquakes with seismic intensity 1 or over by maximum seismic intensity. Fig. 1-1 shows the graph of the monthly number of earthquakes with seismic intensity 1 or over since December 2020. Table 1-2 shows the daily number of earthquakes with seismic intensity 1 or over since the occurrence of the earthquake on June 19 at 15:08 (JST).
