Almost all focal mechanism solutions (CMT solutions) in the vicinity of the recent seismic activity (Area a) have a normal fault type or a strike-slip fault type with a tension axis in an NW-SE direction.
For the seismic activity since 1919, in the region around the recent seismic activity (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. Of these an M5.3 earthquake on September 25, 1975, caused damage with ground fissure at Kodakarajima Island, Toshima Village, Kagoshima prefecture and an M3 class one on July 7, 1972, caused damage with ground fissure and misalignment of roof tiles at Kodakarajima Island, Toshima Village, Kagoshima prefecture.
