Earthquake in the Northern Shiga Prefecture on August 16
On August 16, 2021 at 05:03 (JST), there was an M4.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 13 km in the northern Shiga prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault type with a compression axis in an E-W direction. Also, on the same day at 08:17 (JST), there was an M4.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3) at almost the same place.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M4.0 or so.
For the seismic activity since 1885, in the region around the recent event (Area c), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. On August 14, 1909, there was the Kono Earthquake (the Anegawa Earthquake, M6.8) which caused damage with 41 fatalities, 784 injured persons, 978 totally collapsed houses and so on (Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan).
