Earthquake in the Kemadec Islands on March 5 (1)
On March 5, 2021 at 04:28 (JST, same as below), there was an Mw8.1 earthquake at a depth of 29 km in the Kermadec Islands. The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event occurred at the boundary between the Pacific and the Indo-Australian plates. Japan Meteorological Agency issued Information on a distant earthquake at 04:59 on the same day (Investigating the possibility of tsunami on Japan) and at 10:08 (Slight Change of Sea Level at Japanese Coasts). This earthquake caused tsunami of 1m (visual value) observed at Mare (New Caledonia) and of 0.56 m observed at Norfolk Island (Australia).
Also, about 1 hour 50 minutes before the recent event, i.e. at 02:41, there was an Mw7.4 earthquake at a depth of 43 km in the vicinity of the recent epicenter. The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event occurred at the boundary between the Pacific and the Indo-Australian plates. Japan Meteorological Agency issued Information on a distant earthquake at 03:24 on the same day (No tsunami for Japan) and at 04:10 (Tsunami observed locally). This earthquake caused tsunami of 0.31m observed at Fishing Rock (New Zealand).
For the seismic activity since 1970 in the region around the recent event, there have sometimes been earthquakes of M7.0 or over.
