Earthquake in Reihoku, Fukui Prefecture on September 4

On September 4, 2020 at 09:10, there was an M5.0 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) at a depth of 7 km in Reihoku, Fukui prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event caused damage with 13 slightly injured persons (as of September 11, Fire and Disaster Management Agency).
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M4.0 or over.

For the seismic activity since 1919, in the area around the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. There was the Fukui Earthquake (M7.1, maximum seismic intensity 6) on June 28, 1948 and it caused damage with 3,769 fatalities, 22,203 injured persons and so on. Crustal deformation along the western part of the Fukui-heiya-toen fault zone (eastern edge of the Fukui Plain fault zone) was recognized (Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion). Besides, on August 19, 1961, there was "the Kitamino Earthquake," which caused damage with 8 fatalities and so on (Damage for both earthquakes: Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan).
