Earthquake Offshore West of the Satsuma Peninsula on June 1



On June 1, 2020 at 09:33 (JST), there was an M4.3 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 9 km, offshore west of the Satsuma Peninsula. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a strike-slip fault type with a tension axis in an NW-SE direction.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there has been no earthquake of M4.0 or over. Recently on June 11, 2019, there was an M2.9 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 2).
For the seismic activity since 1885, in the area around the recent event (Area b), there were 6 earthquakes of M5.5 or over. On June 29, 1913, there was an M5.7 earthquake which caused damage with landslides. In addition, on the next day, 30th, there was an M5.9 earthquake which caused damage with landslides and 1 collapsed house and so on (damage for both events: Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan)
