Earthquake in the Central and Western Mino Regions, Gifu Prefecture on June 17
On June 17, 2020 at 15:03 (JST), there was an M4.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 6 km in the central and western Mino region, Gifu prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in an E-W direction.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a) there have sometimes been earthquakes of M3.0 or so. But the recent event is the first one of M4.0 over. Also, in the area around the recent event, on April 22, 1998, there was an M5.5 (maximum seismic intensity 4), which caused damage with 2 injured persons, 5 partially-damaged houses and so on (Fire and Disaster Management Agency).
For the seismic activity since 1885, in the region around the recent event (Area b), in the period from 1890 to 1910 the activity was high, such as the Kono earthquake (the Anegawa Earthquake, M6.8) on August 14, 1909.
