Earthquake near Taiwan on August 8
On August 8, 2019 at 06:28 (JST), there was an M6.4 earthquake (in Japan, maximum seismic intensity 2) near Taiwan.
The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a strike-slip fault type with a compression axis in an NE-SW direction.
For the seismic activity since September 2009, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M6.0 or over. Recently on April 18, 2019, there was an earthquake (M6.5) which caused maximum seismic intensity 2 observed in Japan.
For the seismic activity since 1960, in the region around the recent event (Area b), on November 15, 1986, there was an M7.8 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3 in Japan), which caused tsunami of 30 cm at Taira, Miyakojima Island and damage in Taiwan with 13 fatalities and 45 injured persons. Also, on September 21, 1999, there was the M7.7 Chichi earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 2 in Japan) which caused damage in Taiwan with 2,413 fatalities and 8,700 injured persons (damage: "Catalog of Damaging Earthquakes of the World" by Utsu).
