Earthquake Under the Central and Western Mino Region, Gifu Prefecture on March 9
On March 9, 2019 at 01:08 (JST), there was an M4.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 42km under the central and western Mino region, Gifu prefecture. The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault type with a tension axis in an E-W direction. This event occurred within the Philippine Sea plate.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M4.0 or over. There was an M4.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on March 4, 2015.
For the seismic activity since 1922, in the area around the recent event (Area c), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. On July 7, 1925, there was an M5.6 earthquake which caused damage with fallen chimneys and so on. Recently an earthquake (M4.7, maximum seismic intensity 4) on January 9, 2005 caused damage with 1 slightly-injured person and so on, and an earthquake (M4.8, maximum seismic intensity 4) on December 24, 2005 caused damage with 1 slightly-injured person (damage: Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan).
