Earthquake Offshore Urakawa on September 26
On September 26, 2016 at 14:13 (JST), there was a M5.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 29 km, offshore Urakawa. The focal mechanism of this event showed a strike-slip fault type with a compression axis in an NE-SW direction. After this event, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area b), there was a cluster of small earthquakes until about September 28.
For the seismic activity since October 2001, in Area b, there was a M5.5 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on August 1, 2011.
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area c), there have often been earthquakes of M6.0 or over. Recently on January 14, 2016, there was a M6.7 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) which caused damage with 2 injured persons (Fire and Disaster Management Agency). "The 1982 Urakawa-Oki Earthquake" (M7.1, maximum seismic intensity 6) caused damage with 167 injured persons, 41 totally- and partially-collapsed houses (Disaster Records in 1982 and 1983, Hokkaido 1984).
