Earthquake in the Central Tottori Prefecture on October 21 (1)
(1) Summary
On October 21, 2016 at 14:07 (JST), there was a M6.6 earthquake at a depth of 11 km in the central Tottori prefecture. At this event seismic intensity 6 Lower was observed at Kurayoshi city, Yurihama-cho and Hokuei-cho, Tottori prefecture. In addition to seismic intensity 5 Upper at Tottori city and Misasa-cho, Tottori prefecture and Maniwa city and Kagamino-cho, Okayama prefecture, seismic intensity 5 Lower to 1 were observed in the area extending from Kanto to Kyusyu region centered on Chugoku region.
This event caused damage with 28 injured persons, 2 completely-, 3 partially-collapsed houses and so on (as of November 2 at 09:00 (JST), Fire and Disaster Management Agency). Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced the Earthquake Early Warning (Alarm) for this event at 14:07:36.4, 12.1 second after the detection of the primary seismic wave.
JMA dispatched JMA Mobile Observation Team (JMA-MOT) to the seismic intensity observation points observing 6 Lower to 5 Upper in order to survey their observing environments and the damage situation by the ground motions. The field survey showed no abnormal observing environments.
Damage situation due to the earthquake in the central Tottori prefecture is shown in Table 1-1. The number of earthquakes ordered in the maximum intensity for the intensity 1 or over and the number of earthquakes in time are shown on the next page.
