Earthquake near Taiwan on February 6
On February 6, 2016 at 04:57 (JST hereafter), There was a M6.4 earthquake. The focal mechanism (CMT solution due to USGS) had a compression axis in an ENE-WSW direction. This event caused damage with 35 fatalities, 525 injured persons and so on (as of February 8 at 10:40: National Fire Agency, Ministry of the Interior (Taiwan)).
For the seismic activity since January 1964, in the region around the recent event (Area a), the seismic activity has been brisk and there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over. On January 18, 1964, there was a M5.9 earthquake (Earthquake East-north of Tainan), which caused damage with 106 fatalities, 650 injured persons and so on. Recently, on March 4, 2010, there was a M6.4 earthquake which caused damage with 96 injured persons and so on.
In addition, at the place about 100 km north-north-east of the epicenter of the recent event, on September 21, 1999, there was a M7.7 earthquake (Chi-Chi Earthquake) which caused 2,413 fatalities, 8,700 injured persons and so on.
