Earthquake in the Hida Region, Gifu Prefecture on December 6



On December 6, 2016 at 09:05 (JST), there was a M4.5 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3) at a depth of 5 km in the Hida region, Gifu prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism (preliminary) had a compression axis in an NW-SE direction. In the vicinity of the recent event, there is Inohana fault zone which belongs to Takayama-Oppara fault zone.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M4.0 or over. Just after "the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake," the seismicity temporarily increased. Around the recent event there was a sequence of earthquakes, the maximum being a M5.5 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4), which caused damage with 2 partially-collapsed houses and so on (Fire and Disaster Management Agency).

For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area b), there were 4 earthquakes of M5.0 or over, but no one of M6.0 over.
