c. Past Seismic Activity
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area c), there was a M7.5 earthquake on November 5, 1938. This event caused tsunami with height of 113 cm (total amplitude) observed at Hanabuchi, Miyagi prefecture. After this event the seismic activity in Area c became high, and 25 earthquakes of M6.0 or over occurred until November 30, 1938. Both a M7.4 earthquake on November 6 and a M6.9 one on November 7 caused tsunami with height of 124 cm (total amplitude) observed at Ayukawa, Oshika town, Miyagi prefecture (observed tsunami value: Quarterly Journal of Seismology, vol. 10, No. 3-4). These earthquakes caused damage with 1 fatality, 9 injured persons, 4 totally-, 29 seriously-collapsed houses and so on (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan). Afterwards in Area c, there had sometimes been earthquakes of M6 or so, but no one of M7.0 or over until the occurrence of a M7.0 one (maximum seismic intensity 4) on July 12, 2014.
