Earthquake near Taiwan on February 14



On February 14, 2015 at 05:06 (JST), there was a M6.2 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 1 in Japan) near Taiwan (southeast-off Taiwan). The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a strike-slip fault with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction.
For the seismic activity since July 2000, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M6.0 or over, such as a M6.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 1 in Japan) which occurred on December 10, 2003.

For the seismic activity since January 1960, in the area around the recent event (Area b), on July 23, 1978, there was a M7.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 2 in Japan), which caused tsunami with height of 10 cm observed at Ishigakijima.
