Earthquake in the Southern Kyoto Prefecture on August 6



On August 6, 2014 at 01:17, there was a M4.3 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 14 km in the southern Kyoto prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault type with a compression axis in an E-W direction. Until August 6, there were 2 aftershocks with seismic intensity 1 or over (maximum seismic intensity 2 and 1 for 1 earthquake respectively).
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the area around the recent event (Area a), there was a rather high seismic activity. Recently, there was a M4.0 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3) on June 11, 2014. In addition, there was a M5.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on August 25, 2001, which caused damage with 1 injured person (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5 class, but no earthquakes of M6.0 or over. There was a M5.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on August 18, 1968, which caused damage with 1 seriously damaged house and fissures in the roads (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
