Earthquake under the Middle Eastern Iburi Region on July 8 (1)



[southern Ishikari region] was the regional name of the epicenter used in the JMA announcement.

On July 8, 2014 at 18:05 (JST), there was a M5.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) at a depth of 3 km in the middle eastern Iburi region. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event caused damage with 3 injured persons (Hokkaido). Until July 10, there were 7 aftershocks with seismic intensity 1 or over, the maximum was M4.2 event (maximum seismic intensity 3) that occurred on July 8, at 18:06. Afterwards the seismic activity is decaying.
For the seismic activity since October 2001, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there have often been earthquakes of order M2 to 3 from August, 2013.
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area b), there was a M4.6 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3) in the middle Ishikari region on December 2, 2010. This event caused damage with cracking of glasses, cracks in the ceilings and collapses of slopes (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
