Earthquake in Kuril Islands (Offshore Southeast of Urup Island) on November 25
On November 25, 2013 at 14:56 (JST), there was a M6.0 earthquake in Kuril Islands (offshore southeast of Urup Island). The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a reverse fault with a compression axis in an NW-SE direction.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there was a M6.2 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 1) on July 8, 2012.
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the region around the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of M7.0 or over. There was a M8.1 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on October 13, 1963, which caused tsunami observed at many places in Japan, for example, the height of 74 cm at Hanasaki, Nemuro city, Hokkaido. This tsunami caused slight damage in the fishery institutions at the Sanriku coast of Tohoku region (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
