Earthquake in Northern Hiroshima Prefecture on November 21
On November 21, 2011 at 19:16 (JST), there was a M5.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) at a depth of 12 km in northern Hiroshima prefecture. This event occurred within the crust. The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. This event caused damage with two injured persons and broken panes (Hiroshima prefecture). There were a M4.7 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at 04:35 on November 25, a M4.3 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 3) at 04:52 on November 25, aftershock activities were brisk.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area a), there was no earthquake of M5.0 or over. About 30 km to the north-northwest, there was a M5.2 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) on June 4, 2011.
For the seismic activity since August 1923, in the area around the recent event, there has rarely been earthquake over M6.0. There was a M6.1 earthquake in 1930. It caused damage with a harmed house, and collapse of stone wall (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
