Seismic Activity near the Border between Iwate and Akita Prefectures
Since around July 31, 2010, there has been slightly brisk activity of earthquakes near the border between Iwate and Akita prefectures.
In this activity, there have been 8 earthquakes with seismic intensity of 1 or over, and the maximum seismic intensity was 2. The maximum intensity 2 was observed three times. They were for the M3.5 earthquake at 23:37 on July 31, the M3.2 earthquake at 06:14 on August 4, and the M3.4 earthquake at 13:48 on August 6. The largest event in this activity was the M3.6 earthquake on August 2 (maximum seismic intensity 1).
The activity has been subsiding (as of August 31).
For the seismic activity since January 1970, in the vicinity of the recent seismic activity (Area c), there was a M6.2 earthquake on October 16, 1970 (maximum seismic intensity 5). This earthquake caused damage with 6 injured people and 466 harmed houses (Comprehensive Bibliography of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan, Latest Edition).
