Earthquake Off-shore West of the Ogasawara Islands on November 4



On November 4, 2009, at 03:03 (JST) there was a M5.6 earthquake off-shore west of the Ogasawara Islands (maximum seismic intensity 3). In addition, to the east of this event, there had been a M4.7 earthquake on October 21 (maximum seismic intensity 3), and to the south, there had been a M5.4 earthquake on October 29 (no observed intensities equal to or greater than 1).
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the region near the recent event (Area a), there have sometimes been earthquakes equal to or larger than M6.0. Recently, there were M6.6 earthquakes on February 27 and on March 15 in 2008. (Both had maximum seismic intensity 3.)

In the Japan Meteorological Agency announcement, the regional name of the epicenter [under the ocean area near Chichijima] was used.
