Earthquake in Hyuganada on April 5


On April 5, 2009, at 18:36 (JST) there was a M5.6 earthquake at a depth of 28km in Hyuganada (maximum seismic intensity 4). The focal mechanism (CMT analysis) showed a reverse fault with a compression axis in a NW-SE direction. This event occurred at the boundary between the Philippine Sea and the continental plates.
In the area near this event (Area a), there was a M6.9 earthquake on October 19, 1996, and a M6.7 event on December 3, 1996 (Both had maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower).

For the seismic activity since August 1923, there have been five earthquakes equal to or larger than M7.0 in Hyuganada. Recently there was a M7.1 earthquake on August 7, 1984 (maximum seismic intensity 4).
