Earthquake under Western Aichi Prefecture on April 20
On April 20, 2008 at 01:00 (JST) there was a M4.3 earthquake at a depth of 37km under western Aichi prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 3). The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault with a tension axis in an ENE-WSW direction. This event occurred within the Philippine Sea plate. The seismic activity subsided within a day.
For the seismic activity since January 1997, there was a M5.9 earthquake on March 16, 1997 (maximum seismic intensity 5 Upper) in the vicinity of the recent event, where M4 class earthquakes sometimes occur.
