Seismic Activity Off-shore Southeast of Etorofu Island


Since late March 2007, seismic activity has started off-shore southeast of Etorofu Island. The largest event, as of April 9, was a M5.5 earthquake at 21:19 on April 2. The activity seems to be gradually subsiding.

There were several earthquakes equal to or larger than M7.0 off-shore of Etorofu Island. In the vicinity of the recent seismic activity, earthquakes equal to or larger than M8.0 occurred on November 7, 1958 (M8.1, thought to be an intraplate earthquake) and on October 13, 1963 (M8.1, thought to be a plate-boundary earthquake).
