Seismic Activity in the Chikuhou Region, Fukuoka Prefecture


Since August 27, 2005, seismic activity started in the Chikuhou region, Fukuoka prefecture, and it increased since October 1. The seismicity was concentrated within a very small area where over 600 events occurred. The activity mostly subsided by October 6. The largest earthquake was a M2.8 (maximum seismic intensity 2) at 00:29 on October 2. Overall, the sizes of events were small. (Figure A)

In the past activity, including the historical record, there have been no earthquakes equal to or larger than M5.0 in this vicinity. (Figure B)
