Earthquake near Taiwan on November 9
On November 9, 2004, at 00:54 (JST), there was a M6.4 earthquake at a depth of 32km near Taiwan (maximum seismic intensity 2). There was moderately strong aftershock activity after this event, with a M5.5 at 04:38 on November 9 and a M5.3 at 23:48 on November 10.
This event occurred within a region where earthquakes often occur in clusters. In this active region, there were 3 earthquakes equal to or greater than M6.0 in 2002 (May 29, July 11, and September 1).
In this vicinity (Area b), there have been comparatively many earthquakes equal to or greater than M6.0. Such earthquakes have been occurring at a rate of about once every several years since 1980.
In addition, on November 11, at 11:16, there was a M5.9 earthquake approximately 60km NNW of the event on November 9 (depth of 50km, maximum seismic intensity 2).
