Seismic Activity in the Reihoku region of Fukui prefecture

On February 11, there was a M4.0 earthquake at a depth of 6km in the Reihoku region of Fukui prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 3).
This event had a main-shock aftershock sequence, which had mostly subsided by the end of February.
The 1948 Fukui Earthquake (M7.1, activity of the Fukui Plain eastern margin faulting zone) occurred near this event.
The focal mechanism showed a strike-slip fault with a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction. The direction of the compression axis is commonly seen in shallow events in this vicinity.
On February 22, there was a M4.0 earthquake off-shore west of Ishikawa prefecture (maximum seismic intensity 2). The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault with a compression axis in a NW-SE direction.
