Aftershocks associated with the earthquake that occurred at 1:30 pm on the 6th of this month in western Tottori Prefecture (M7.3, tentative data, as below) continue to occur.

At 8:51 p.m. on the 8th of this month, there was an M5.0 event near the northern tip of the aftershock zone, which registered a maximum seismic intensity of 5 lower. This event is the strongest aftershock to present.

The aftershock activity level has been high, but has gradually decreased over time. It is estimated that there is a 3% chance of an M5.5 or greater aftershock, and a 10% of an M5.0 greater aftershock occurring within the three-day period starting at 4:00 p.m. today. There is also concern that an event of seismic intensity 5 lower or greater may occur, so precautions should be taken against structural damage and landslides.
