Earthquake under the Chishima Islands (near Urup Island) on September 4


On September 4, 2007 at 01:14 (JST) there was a M6.3 earthquake at a depth of 126km under the Chishima Islands (near Urup Island) (maximum seismic intensity 2). There were M3 class aftershocks on September 4 and 5.
According to the Global CMT, the focal mechanism had a compression axis in a WNW-ESE direction.

Since August in 1923, M7 class earthquakes have occurred many times in this vicinity.
Among those events, there was only one with a source that was determined to be deep, a M7.2 earthquake on October 27, 1959 (140km).
