Seismic activity in the sea near Amami Oshima (near the island of Akusekijima) (1)


Since October 2nd, there has been concentrated seismic activity including a maximum M5.7 event, and the focal mechanism of the M5.7 and M5.2 events were normal fault types with northwest-southeast tension axes. In the area near the present region of activity, there was an M5.9 event on August 3rd 1991, an M5.4 event on December 17th 1995, and an M5.3 event on December 18 of the same year.
